Order & Intuition

An artist date at the Mondriaanhuis

I’ve started rescheduling some of the artist dates I missed in April. However, some days you just don’t feel like making a full-day trip.

Luckily, I have local museums I can visit.

So on a Tuesday afternoon, I walked into the city centre and visited the Mondriaanhuis (Mondrian House). Piet Mondrian was born in this house, and it’s now a small museum.

The permanent collection tells his life story and shows some of his early work. I skipped (almost) all of that because I’ve been here many times before and came to see the temporary exhibition Orde & Intuïtie (Order & Intuition) featuring the two textile artists Irene Companjen and Theo Rooden.

The temporary exhibition was tiny. And I mean teeeeny. Still, I was very happy to see it.

Theo Rooden weaves his artwork with great care and precision. I don’t know enough about the different weaving techniques he uses, but the work is stunning.

Irene Companjen prints on large pieces of linen. She uses handmade stamps and stencils, so this was work I could immediately understand and relate to.

Her work often features recognisable objects in repeated patterns, though what object isn’t always immediately clear. You’re encouraged to look at the work first before reading the title.

Both artists were clearly inspired by Mondrian’s work, though their approaches are very different. Seeing their work together reminded me of Tara Axford’s gel prints, and of her course Art & Design at Take Two Art, which I took a couple of years ago. I loved it for exactly this combination of printing, art, and design.

The exhibition included a video showing the artists at work. Watch it here: Irene Companjen en Theo Rooden - Mondriaanhuis - Expositie ‘Orde & Intuïtie’ - FlowFilm

I enjoyed seeing the process alongside the finished work!

Enjoy your day!

Marsha.
